Applying abroad? Don’t let English test fees drain your wallet!

Let’s talk about one of the most frustrating parts of applying for international scholarships, global fellowships, or postgraduate programs: the cost of English proficiency tests.

Before you spend hundreds of dollars booking an IELTS or TOEFL exam, here’s some great news: if you completed your degree in Nigeria, you may not need to take either test at all.

Many international universities and scholarship providers will waive the English language test requirement if you can prove that your degree was taught entirely in English.

How do you prove it? With an official English as a Medium of Instruction Attestation Letter issued by your university.

What Should a Valid Attestation Letter Contain?

To help you obtain the correct document from your institution’s registry, we’ve provided an official template.

A valid attestation letter should clearly confirm the following:

  • Your full name.
  • Your matriculation number.
  • The exact degree you were awarded.
  • Your class of degree or graduation grade.
  • Your academic session or year of graduation.
Official Senate Approval

The letter should formally state that your academic results have been approved by the University Senate.

The Most Important Statement

To qualify for an IELTS or TOEFL waiver, the letter must clearly certify that English is both the medium of instruction and the medium of examination at your university.

Finally, the document should conclude with a formal request asking the receiving institution to render you the necessary assistance based on the information provided. It should also be signed by the appropriate university official, such as the Principal Assistant Registrar (Students’ Records) or an equivalent registry officer.

Career Drive Academy Insider Tip

Don’t wait until a scholarship deadline is only a few days away before requesting this document.

University registry offices can take time to process requests, so visit your alma mater’s Exams and Records Department early. Take this template with you and request your attestation letter well in advance.

Since it’s typically a one-time document, obtaining it now can save you both money and unnecessary stress on future applications.
